The Importance of Scalability in 3PL

Scalability is the ability to scale up or down based on the demands of their customer. As demand changes, the resources needed to maintain the business also change. 

Scalability is crucial for many businesses as it allows for growth and the opportunity to take on new customers with ease. While the goal for most businesses is to grow their customer reach, most are not equipped to handle a sudden increase in customer demand. Going from hundreds of customers to thousands of customers in a short time is great for your business, unless you are unable to scale your operations with that growth.

Scalability in an eCommerce fulfilment setting is crucial to getting orders packaged and on their way to the customer within the specified delivery date. Scalability allows for increased or decreased resources to be put towards your eCommerce business, whether that means more vehicles for fulfilling and distributing the product, or offering adequate space that can grow or shrink with the amount of product coming in and out. 

 

Scalability in distribution

A strong distribution sector is crucial to getting your product where it needs to be. However, it can be greatly affected by an influx of orders from yourself, or others using the same provider. This is why scalability within your 3PL provider’s distribution is crucial. 

If a 3PL provider, or your own distributor, has enough delivery vehicles for just a handful of clients, and one of the customers suddenly experiences an increase in orders, the distributors may not be able to handle this change and could cause delays with other orders due to their limited vehicles and space. A 3PL provider with scalable distribution resources will be able to accommodate this change by having extra vehicles readily available, or contacts who can assist with the increase of deliveries. In order to not lose profit from cancelled or undelivered products, it is essential to know the scalability of your distributor to ensure they can handle your growth or anothers, who in turn would affect your distribution.

When working with a 3PL that has great scalability, you will experience fewer roadblocks with your orders. This is because scalability works to remove these issues before they arise by delegating more or fewer resources towards the potential problem. For example, in order to keep your orders timely during an annual peak season, a good 3PL will understand this busy trend and delegate more resources to the areas of business that experience an influx of use. As a result, operations continue as normal with less chance of disruptions along the way.

  • Does my company experience an increased demand during a particular season?
  • Does my company also experience lower demands during certain points of the year?
  • If my company were to enter a new market, would we have a dramatic increase in demand?
  • If my company were to experience a drastic change in demand, how would we fare short term? How about in the long term?
  • Is our current warehousing or storage solution capable of holding increased product?
  • Is our current means of distribution capable of handling a dramatic increase of deliveries?

    • What about products I may have in the future? 
  • Are their distribution methods scalable and do they align with the needs my company  has?
  • Does this provider offer a competitive edge on managing my inventory and order as they increase or decrease?
  • How would this 3PL provider work with me if we experience an increased demand during a particular season?
  • How does the 3PL provider allow for scalability in their warehousing or storage solutions?
  • Will this provider work with me in my peak seasons to scale up the resources provided to me?
    • Will they also scale back when I am in my non-peak seasons?
